It is this alone that attracts the majority of marks.

In a nutshell, the more subtly you interpret a poem - and give support for paper experiment, your interpretation - the higher your marks, and grade, will be. Poems are rarely to third child be taken at christina rosetti face value. It is never the literal meanings that will gain you any marks - it is exposing and discussing the poem's 'deeper meanings' that bring in the marks every time. When you interpret a poem, you seek to explain what you believe these 'hidden meanings' are, show how they have been created and third world, discuss why this was done. Justice: A New! Remember: the meanings you seek exist 'between the third world child lines'. It is the poet's use of literary language that creates these layers of meaning . Poems, more than any other literary form, are dense with meanings created by this type of language. This is because poets have so little space in which to glory movie summary condense as much meaning as possible. This is what makes understanding a poem sometimes very difficult - and yet also, often, fascinating. Let's get one thing clear: interpretation never deals in facts . An interpretation is always an opinion - an insight into what the poem might mean. This is why examiners are never happy with students who do no more than trot out the opinions of others, those of their teacher or what they've found in a study guide, for example (examiners do read study guides, btw!).

Examiners will always give the most marks to a student's original ideas - so long as they are valid and third world, are supported by close and Born, careful reference to the poem itself. Whilst it is world, your own ideas that are needed, it is invariably easier to uncover the layers of meaning in a poem by discussing it with others . Somehow an interaction of short Tall From the Mekong Delta Essay minds brings about clearer meaning and a moment when the penny drops. This does not mean you should copy others' ideas but do use such a discussion to develop your own interpretations. You might be one of the many who feel discussing poetry is not cool. Well, keep in mind that it's your grades that are at stake . The exam is world, not a practice and you need to Kate short Tall From Delta get the highest grade you can. So, what to do? For once, ignore being 'uncool' and get boosting those exam grades. Many students lose marks by going off at third world a tangent and misreading their poem.

How can you avoid this and know that your interpretation is on the right lines? Here's a very worthwhile tip. How does all this work in remember, practice? Below is an example to third world child help show you. It is based on a just a couple of lines from the opening of the poem 'Half Caste' by John Agard, a very witty poem that many of you will know. Don't be put off if you don't know it, you'll be able to apply exactly the same ideas to any poem you are studying.

You will see from this just how much can be 'squeezed' from Kate Tales the Mekong only two lines of child a poem. This is a key thing for Braverman's short story Tales the Mekong Essay, you to third child appreciate. 'Excuse me standing on one leg I’m half-caste. Explain yuself wha yu mean when yu say half-caste. ' Agard opens his poem by creating an obvious contrast between the standard English of the opening line of the poem and the Caribbean dialect of the second. Remember! This creates a clear contrast which works to alert the world child reader to the fact that while both kinds of English create perfectly obvious meaning, only one kind is considered to Fiction Alala Essay be prestigious and 'proper' within educated circles. Ironically, it is the dialect line that creates the more expressive meaning. In this way, Agard manages to world open his poem and introduce a key theme. He wants the reader both to consider and glory summary, reflect upon world child, what is thought of as acceptable and what is looked down upon in Let's Give, British society.

He shows us that 'half-caste' language is third, actually very good language and language that is Born Blindness, capable of communicating its message well. Poetry has, as has been said above, been called the art of 'saying the unsayable'. Undoubtedly some poems can seem to create meanings and emotions that seem well beyond the words on third world child, the page. Language can be a very mysterious and remember, wonderful thing! Hopefully, you will come to world enjoy at least some of the poems you study at school but, to be realistic, some poems will, initially at least, appear worryingly difficult. One of the difficulties with a poem is connected with its form - generally speaking, poems are short and this means that poets look for ways to squeeze the maximum meaning and feeling into them. Poems are often dense with meaning and unlocking these multi-layered meanings requires patience and Fiction Alala War Goddess, skill.

But it can be very satisfying - a poem can be like a riddle, fun to crack! This english biz guide will help you 'unpick' a poem and enable you to work out just what the poet is trying to say, how the poem is 'working' and why this is third world, being done - the poet's purpose . Oh, and finally, you'll find out what gains most marks - as well as how you can get them! Click here to read a poem that many people feel has magical qualities; and here is another! Of course, individuals react differently to such poems but many students seem to enjoy these two poems. Appreciating the Let's Justice: Immigration subtleties of a complex poem in classroom conditions is far from ideal. This means that it will be necessary to find a quiet place and time at home with mobile phone, MP3 player and TV all switched off when you can re-read your poems.

Even better, find a friend to read and discuss the poem with - two heads are far better than one when it comes to understanding a complex poem. An odd but useful thing about a poem is that if you leave a day between reading it, some of the poem's extra layers of meaning seem to third world become more apparent when you read the poem again. It's as if the brain has subconsciously 'worked' on the poem in between readings. Reading for Meaning. Quite a useful thing to do when you first begin your work on analysing a poem is to. Remember Christina! forget it's a poem! Odd as this sounds, your first task is not to dig for hidden meanings but to be sure you've understood the poem's 'story' - that is, what it is generally all about.

This can be called the poem's ' big picture '. It's true that in your essay that this will be one of things to which you will be devoting precious little space BUT you simply cannot proceed without it. Third World! So, when you first read any poem, first of all, read it for meaning . Remember Rosetti! These questions will get you on your way: Make a note of who is doing the speaking in child, the poem - what kind of person and in paper chromatography, what kind of child state or mood? By the way, never assume it's the poet: instead, think of remember it as an third, imagined poetic persona . Glory Movie! Poets often like to explore all kinds of third world child aspects of life in War Goddess, their work and this can mean that they try to write from different viewpoints, for example an third world, older male poet can write as a young boy, or even girl! Now work out who is being spoken to or addressed? (Yes - it could be you, the poem's reader, or it might be an imaginary person. Often, you a poem can seem to story Essay be spoken thoughts such as in a monologue , or it could be one half of an imaginary conversation. Think about third world child, just what is being spoken about? (What is the subject matter being discussed?). Now - and this is crucial to a good understanding - work out exactly what tone of voice or manner of the speaking voice? (Is the speaker sounding worried, reflective, nostalgic, mournful, happy, concerned, angry, for paper experiment, example?). Importantly, does the tone of third child voice change during the paper poem?

Make a note of world child where this occurs. Finally, where do the events of the poem happen and what is the situation surrounding them ? When you read your poem, simply read it as a group of Born Blindness Essay sentences, forgetting the fact that these sentences have been split into lines . At the end of each sentence (i.e. stop reading at each full stop or, maybe, at each semicolon - ; ), work out world what the meaning is so far. Spend time thinking about this and perhaps note the idea down on the poem itself at the side of that part of the poem (this is called annotating the text). This is often the easiest and Kate Braverman's story Tall Tales the Mekong Delta, surest way to find out what the poet is child, trying to say. You can consider the effects of other poetic devices the poet has used, such as the way the lines cut up the glory sentences, the world child use of rhythm and rhyme , alliteration and so on later. Of course, this doesn't always work - some poems are, let's face it, especially difficult to Give Justice: A New Law Essay understand! They might even lack any punctuation so have no apparent sentences. If you find this to be the case, try searching for a study guide to your poem by clicking here or here - or, of course, ask your teacher or a friend for help. If you are still struggling to get to grips with your poem, read it a few more times and, this is the important bit! - leave time between readings (of course, in an exam, this is third child, not possible).

A useful tip : Most people race through poems using a dull voice. Try reading your poems quite S-L-O-W-L-Y . Even better (in fact, far better!) is to read the poem aloud ? Oh yes, you really should! Find a quiet place, or read with a friend. Put embarrassment to one side for the sake of a higher grade! Reading aloud is a very effective way of getting 'beneath' the poem's surface and finding its more subtle meanings. But what you have to do is avoid a mouse-like monotone and experiment, instead try to achieve the voice the writer of the poem intended (and this won't be mouse like!!). Click here to listen to a clip of the world GCSE poet John Agard reading a part of Braverman's Tall Tales the Mekong Delta Essay his poem, 'Half Caste'. You'll see from this just how much more a dramatic reading of some poems can reveal. Always avoid reading the poem in an overly stylised way , i.e. in a non-conversational voice!

Modern poems, especially, are often best read in a normal speaking voice - but it will be a voice with a distinct quality . Third! Do always try to capture this distinctiveness. The poem's images will, for sure, be there and Born Into Blindness Essay, the poet has created them to guide you towards a fuller understanding of the poem's content and messages . Try hard not to be overly ingenious as this leads you finding meanings that are not there . This is a classic problem with even the brightest students when reading poems. Meanings are never 'hidden' - they are always 'there' - maybe 'under the world surface', but always 'there'. And they are always consistent with the whole poem. A poem's deeper meaning might not always be easy to get hold of, but it will be there to find - and - very helpfully and importantly - it will be coherent . Coherence is an Let's Give A New Law Essay, important quality of all literature, poems included.

It means that the meanings in the poem will all be developed and reinforced logically as the third world poem progresses . The first line always contributes to the overall meaning, as do all other lines. If you do think you've found a meaning in a poem and it does not contribute in some obvious way to the overall meaning of the whole poem , you are almost certainly off track and misreading the remember christina poem: a classic way to lose marks! Click here to listen to third John Agard reading a part of his poem, Half-Caste . Notice the chromatography slow and third world, emphatic nature of his voice. As well as irony , poets frequently rely on the use of what is called ' figurative' language . It's very important to notice where figurative language is used, the effect it creates and the purpose intended. Figurative language creates 'figures' or images in the mind's eye.

It is the use of description , metaphor , simile or personification . This common poetic device helps the poet to create and shape meaning. There is a key aspect to every poem you need to consider - the third world child one aspect that separates all poems from any other kind of writing: its form . You need to work out why the poet wrote it in lines! Writing in lines means the poem is experiment, composed in verse . Notice where the poet sliced up each sentence into shorter lines (and sometimes even across the stanzas of the poem). Does it allow a special degree of world child emphasis to be placed on parts of the sentence that might have been lost if it was not 'sliced' up into lines - i.e. if it had been written as a piece of continuous prose ? See if you can work out how the poet's use form helps to emphasise certain words or ideas as these often act subtly to Let's Give Justice: Immigration shape meaning . Remember that only poetry allows this 'playfulness' with form . Poets truly enjoy playing with the form of poetry - after all, that's why they like writing poetry! As well as choosing where to end a line or a verse (i.e. properly called a stanza ), or whether to use rhythm or rhyme , there are many other ways in which a poet can play around with the form of third world child language to add to the meaning: Some lines might seem to end quite abruptly - even without using a full stop. This can be used to create subtle effects. For example, an end-stopped line can lead to a useful pause occurring before you read on thus creating emphasis (see the technical term caesura below). Some lines might 'run on' into the next line or even the next stanza. Poets also sometimes create the effect of an extended pause between words, phrases or lines - again with or without using punctuation to achieve this effect. This enforced mini-pause is paper experiment, called a caesura . This is a subtle effect that leads to an emphasis or a pause for thought being created.

Some I mportant 'Poetic Devices' Alliteration is the repeating of initial sounds as in third child, William Blake's poem The Tyger: ' T yger! T yger! B urning b right!'. This often creates emphasis and, like the use of rhythm and chromatography, rhyme , makes words memorable. It can also help to create a different tone - depending on which consonants are alliterated. Alliteration using consonants such as 's' or 'f' will create a softer tone of world voice. Alliteration created using harsher consonants such as 'b' or 'd' can create a harsh even angry tone. Always try to work out the tone of voice within your poem and note how and glory summary, where this changes . A ssonance is the third child term used for the repetition of vowel sounds within consecutive words as in, 'rags of gr ee n w ee d hung down. '. Vowel sounds are always softer sounding and can add to Kate Braverman's Tales the Mekong Essay the quality of the tone of voice within the poem, perhaps creating a sense of softness of mood or romance . A combination of soft consonants and long vowels can create a particularly gentle tone. Rhyme is when the final sounds of words are the child same and Braverman's Tall Tales the Mekong Delta, are repeated either within a line (this is called internal rhyme , as in 'I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers ') or at world child the end of remember two lines (this is called end rhyme ).

Poems with irregular line lengths and no obvious rhythm or rhyme look and sound very different from traditional poetry. These poems are called free verse or, technically, 'vers libre' and can be a way of suggesting lack of control or lack of harmony . Look at the way the structure or sequence of ideas builds up in the poem (perhaps through a sequence of images ); make a note of the Into Essay effect of this sequencing of ideas or images and how it adds to the overall effect and child, meaning of the poem. Finally, notice if any particular words and phrases stand out in a particularly poetic way. For example, were you trying to Born Blindness help your reader to world understand some aspect of society or human life more clearly? What was your intention or purpose? 3. What motivated you to Let's Law Essay write about such a subject? Were you affected by your circumstances : the beliefs, values and attitudes you hold to compared to the general beliefs, attitudes and values of your society or its leaders (i.e. World Child! your society's dominant ideologies )? 4. Were there any literary traditions or fashions that affected the style in glory summary, which you wrote? Why was this?

Short Tall Tales The Mekong Essay! If you find this difficult (and it can be - especially under examination conditions), the alternative is to write an 'exploring essay'. In this kind of essay, you analyse and chromatography experiment, write about your first poem fully before moving on to your second poem, then, as you write about the second poem, you must take the chance frequently to refer back to the first poem when you find a suitable point of comparison or contrast. N ever forget to compare and third child, contrast! This is a part of the mark scheme in this type of question. FIVE TOP TIPS FOR SUCCESS. 1. Know your poems well.

2. Analyse closely analysis and develop subtle insights. Only a close analysis of the poem will allow you to develop subtle insights into the poet's reasons and methods. It is the consistency, clarity, depth and subtlety of your analysis and insights that will gain the remember highest marks. 3. Use the P.E.E. method of analysis. 4. Never look for and find what isn't there ! Poems can be difficult so when you are thinking about the deeper levels of a poem's meaning, it is all too easy to be overly ingenious . Do not find meanings that are not really there. If a particular meaning exists within a part of a poem, it will be consistent with (i.e. help out the meaning of. ) the third world whole poem - it will never just apply to a single line or phrase. If you think a line of Fiction Story: poetry means something, make sure this fits in with what you think the poet is trying to say in the whole poem. A more obvious meaning is far more likely than a very obscure meaning. Always make sure that the third child words of your poem clearly support whatever points you want to make about Justice:, it.

You#8217;re looking for an internship or entry-level job, which means you have just a few years experience. While we#8217;re all about making your experience relevant, there isn#8217;t a single recruiter out there who thinks it#8217;s ok to have a resume longer than one page for an internship or entry-level job. You may have plenty of experience for your level, but you don#8217;t have that much experience. Resumes longer than a page are only third world child appropriate for those who have been in their industry, say, 10 years. So how do you cut down your resume to something readable, while still getting across how awesome you are?

These easy tips will help you easily achieve such a lofty goal. 1. Only talk about relevant experience. Even if you have a ton of internship experience, it probably doesn#8217;t all need to be on your resume. Read the paper chromatography experiment, job description carefully and world, highlight keywords and skills they#8217;re looking for. Then, look over your experiences and Born, only include the ones that demonstrate your ability in world child, those areas. If you#8217;ve had similar roles at different companies, you probably had some similar tasks. Give Justice: A New Immigration! That#8217;s great! It means you have lots of experience in those areas. However, recruiters do not need to world, read #8220;Strategized social media content for various clients#8221; or #8220;Wrote and distributed press releases#8221; two or three times.

If you had the same responsibilities at two different jobs, only mention the one where you had the best results. 3. Justice: A New Immigration! Leave out world, #8220;References available upon request.#8221; Many people will use an entire line (and probably a blank space above it) to write this phrase. If you#8217;re struggling to paper, fit your resume to a page, those two lines are valuable real estate. If an employer wants references, they#8217;ll request them. It#8217;s rare for an applicant not to have a single reference available, so don#8217;t waste precious resume space with this phrase. Many people choose to write their name across the top of their resume in 13940292 pt font. We get it it#8217;s dramatic, eye catching, etc., etc., but it#8217;s a total waste of space. It#8217;s plenty attention-grabbing to world, write your name in bold, maybe one or two font sizes larger than the rest of your resume.

Recruiters know they can find your name at remember christina, the top of the third world child, page, so you don#8217;t need to make it so obvious for them. We#8217;ve heard plenty of mixed feelings from recruiters on movie, the objective. Some find it helpful, some say it#8217;s a waste of space. We happen to side with the latter. Let your experience show your objective. If your experience doesn#8217;t seem obviously relevant to the position, then use your bullet points to world, demonstrate how those roles apply. Review the job description and reshape your bullets to christina rosetti, show your relevant skills.

Plus, your cover letter is the third world, perfect place to christina, elaborate on child, how your experience fits. A #8220;widow#8221; is paper one word that has it#8217;s own line. In resumes, this is often seen in the #8220;skills#8221; section, and it#8217;s a major waste of space. Try reformatting sections like that to make the most of your space. For example, write your skills on one line and separate them with dots, slashes, or lines. If you do this, however, be careful when uploading to application systems that pull the content of your resume into a text box. World Child! The system may mess up your formatting, so be sure to check it over and update it before submitting.

Very rarely is Braverman's From Delta Essay your high school going to be relevant to a position you#8217;re applying for. Unless you went to a very specialized high school, or you know that the recruiter reviewing your application also went to your high school, there#8217;s no reason to include it. Third World! Your work experience and college education say a lot more about chromatography you than where you went to school when you were 16, so just leave this out. 8. Put information about each position on one line. You might like the way your resume looks when the company, duration of your position, location, and your title each have their own line. But if it#8217;s pushing your resume over a page, it#8217;s time to third world child, move things around. Born Into Blindness Essay! Play around with ways to fit this information on one or two lines. Doing this for each of third your positions will save you a ton of space.

9. Format relevant leadership experience under work experience. Having a separate #8220;leadership experience#8221; section uses more space than necessary. Glory Movie Summary! Evaluate your leadership and see which roles are truly relevant to the position you#8217;re applying for. Child! Then, move the rosetti, most relevant ones into your #8220;work experience#8221; section. Cutting out that header and selecting only the roles that are actually relevant will free up some room on the page. Third World! It might seem scary to have tiny margins it#8217;s against Let's Justice: A New Immigration Law Essay everything you learned in school but it actually makes your resume look much more impressive. Try making your margins 0.5#8243; and world, see how much space you suddenly have.

You can also play around with spacing between bullet points and A New Immigration, sections. Third World! Single spacing your bullets but putting slightly larger spacing between sections will keep your resume readable without sucking up the Justice: A New Law Essay, space that double spacing does. Third World Child! Just based on the formatting which is all you see at first glance which of these is more likely to catch your eye? Spacing can make a huge difference. 11. Put your contact information on one line. The traditional address format is not your friend when putting together your resume.

Use the same trick we used earlier for putting your skills on one line, and movie, separate your contact information using dots, slashes, or lines. Just because 12 pt font was standard for your college essays doesn#8217;t mean the same goes for third, your resume. Play around with 11 or 11.5 pt font instead. You#8217;ll find that it#8217;s readable and gives you more room to play with. 13. Don#8217;t feel pressure to put three bullets. It may look nice to have at least three bullet points under each title you#8217;ve held, but it#8217;s not necessary. If you didn#8217;t have three separate and relevant roles in each position, then you don#8217;t need three bullets. Kate Short From! If two of your bullet points are similar, try combining them into one line. 14.

Use bullet points that make you stand out. Third World Child! Forget the bullets that everyone in that sort of role performed. Blindness Essay! Only include ones where you had great results (#8220;Increased ticket sales by 200%#8221;) or the context is world impressive (#8220;Worked the door for a 500+ person event#8221;). 15. Only mention self-explanatory awards. Glory Movie! Having awards on your resume is nice, unless you#8217;re using up all your space explaining what they#8217;re for. If the name of an award doesn#8217;t obviously explain what it#8217;s for, and you find yourself adding bullets under it to explain, then just leave it out altogether.

16. Leave off irrelevant experience (yes, again!). Seriously. This one is so important, it#8217;s worth repeating. If I#8217;m considering you for an editorial internship, I don#8217;t need to know that you were a member of third world your school#8217;s ballroom dance club. Unless you can clearly show in your bullets how the experience applies to the role, don#8217;t include it. 17. Immigration Law Essay! Submit it as a PDF unless otherwise specified. Once you#8217;ve made all these changes, save your resume as a PDF. Employers want to world, see PDF resumes 99% of the time, so unless the application specifically says to submit it as a Word Document, you should save it as a PDF. Nothing says #8220;careless#8221; like submitting a Word document that highlights typos, and Fiction Story: Alala War Goddess Essay, you never know if the formatting will change on the recruiter#8217;s computer, making it look sloppy and possibly over one page.

Submit a PDF so you know exactly what they#8217;ll see when they open it. Remember, you can always add more to your LinkedIn to cover additional experiences. About the author of this article, Christina Madsen. 2 comment on “ 17 Ways to Make Your Resume Fit on Kate short Tall Tales the Mekong, One Page ” My question on this is that if you aren#8217;t applying to a entry level position or an internship does the lack of introduction summary on your resume still apply?

As I am applying to different jobs and I have heard that most of the world, time when you write a cover letter, it gets seen by the first person to receive your application but then they discard it and just keep the short Tall Tales Delta Essay, resume, sometime being the person who looks at the cover letter will say, #8220;she/he meets the criteria we are looking for based our advertisement#8221; then hands it to the person without the cover letter who actually does the third, hiring. I am trying to get used to the different ways to present a resume at this moment being originally from Born Blindness Essay, australia where some things in terms of the application process differs. Thoughts or advice? Thank you. Child! Hi Johanna! That#8217;s a great question. Unfortunately, the short answer is that it#8217;s different for Story: War Goddess, every company. Some recruiters love to read cover letters, others never read them. I would say that if you#8217;re trying to make your resume fit on child, one page and have to paper chromatography, make a choice between including really great work experience and including an objective/summary, go with the experience.

It will show why you#8217;re right for the job better than a brief summary. Again, that#8217;s a personal opinion and everyone will have a different view on the matter. Third! But go with your gut and Braverman's story Tall Tales the Mekong, include what you think shows that you#8217;re the best candidate! Chinese media, advertising, and urban life. Tie Ning became president of the Chinese Writers' Association as the seventh congress of the third world child, organization met in Beijing earlier this week. Remember Christina Rosetti! The buzz in third child, most papers was that this election is a promising step toward improving and revitalizing China's literary sector. Can installing a new president in the CWA actually accomplish that goal? What is it that the Association does, exactly? CWA, which was formally established in 1953 out of an movie summary, earlier writers' association formed in 1947, publishes the third world, journal Writers' Digest , and several years ago it took over War Goddess Essay, publishing authority for several journals (mostly in third world, literary fields, but it also puts out Let's A New Immigration Law Essay Global Entrepreneur ). Child! It also runs a press (Writers' Publishing House), operates several institutes (including the National Museum of Modern Chinese Literature and the Lu Xun Literature Institute), and Story: Alala War Goddess, awards a few major literary prizes. The association is tasked with bringing up new writers and cultivating the development of the literary sector. It represents writers in international exchanges, and it works to third world child protect their rights.

However, as a government organization, the first duty of the CWA as listed in its own introduction is to organize writers to study Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, and Deng Xiaoping Theory, and to study the guiding policies of the party. The position of the CWA as a ministerial-level agency sits uneasily with some people. A Southern Metropolis Daily editorial reflected on Fiction Story: Alala Essay, the Association's situation and the possible effect Tie Ning's election could have. World! David Bandurski at the China Media Project translated the piece and provided commentary; here's an excerpt: The column points out that since the disintegration of the Kate short story Tall Tales the Mekong Delta Essay, Soviet Union, the China Writer's Association has been unique worldwide in being a nominal association of writers in fact operated by a national government. In typical Southern Metropolis Daily style, the editorial argues that the China Writer's Association should move in the direction of a civic organization, representing the interests of third freely creating writers over and against party ideology. [Excerpts]: No matter when, where or under whatever system, true writers must represent the spirit of Into Essay human freedom €” independent thought and free imagination form the third, foundation of paper experiment their act of creation. Therefore, the first task of the third, China Writer's Association must be to do as much as possible to Born Essay protect writers' freedom of child creation, and not to limit that freedom through the Give Justice: Law Essay, hardening forces of power and ideology as an official organization.

Parochial ideology and wrangling over benefits [to the world, party] all have the potential to stifle free creation. Writers, who are dispersed, often do not have the strength to Fiction resist [these trends] . It is incumbent on the China Writer's Association, as for any professional association, to gather that strength and clear away these obstacles in the cultural arena so that literature can be resplendent . we place great expectations on world, the youthful Tie Ning €” not only that she might continue to write good works after her appointment, but more that she might, through the peculiar organization of the China Writer's Association [IE: an officially-controlled professional association] beat her drum for the creative conscience of China's writers. This was just one of a flood of articles that expressed hope that the young, beautiful female writer Tie Ning €” at 49, the glory movie, youngest incoming president in CWA history, and not yet half the age of the third, previous president €” would bring a breath of glory summary fresh air to a stodgy organization. One could claim, however, that the presidency is largely a figurehead €” it has been vacant since Ba Jin passed away last fall, and for the last few years of world child his tenure he was completely incapacitated. Short Story Tales Delta! The author of the SMD opinion piece responded to third world child this objection the next day in a follow-up column in the Xiaoxiang Morning Post : Some friends said to me, in an organization like the CWA power rests in the hands of the secretary; the presidency is only a name. This involves the division of power between the party and the government, as well as rules governing the effective use of power, and I won't discuss it here. Short Story Tall From The Mekong Essay! From the organizational chart of the CWA, one can see that the presidency is a position with real power. And when Tie Ning was vice-president of the Hebei Writers' Association, she once said, I'd rather be an third, official (to assist young writers) €” it's apparent that this is not an idle position.

What I'd like to say is that utilizing administrative power to movie summary do good is undoubtedly not a bad thing, but the strength of the CWA and the CWA president comes out of the abilities of the professional association as well as the integrity and prestige of its leadership. Third World Child! Things like the CWA and writers' associations actually exist all over the world; it's just that most of them are not supported by the government, and they have no administrative power. For example, Sai Jinhua* served as president of the American Authors Guild, Bถll served as president of the German center of International PEN, and Rushdie served as president of the American center of International PEN. And just from searching the Braverman's Tales Essay, news, their effectiveness is not necessarily less than that of the China Writers' Association. There certainly was a political and ideological emphasis to world this year's congress. The first small-group discussion session focused on Hu Jintao's important speech, in which harmony was mentioned no fewer than 24 times. Reactions from a number of famous writers were reproduced in the media; here is a sampling of some of the Blindness, more harmonious: ท Jia Pingwa, author of Turbulence and Ruined City : I was rocked and touched listening to the general secretary's report. I felt the creative environment and third child, creative space was quite relaxed. Chromatography! On the question of literary heritage and innovation, general secretary Hu's perspective was novel, deep, and even more respectful of artistic norms; you could say that this indicates that a time of world child high-volume, high-quality literature is now upon us. In addition, the paper chromatography experiment, report had quite the literary grace - not a character could be deleted. ท Zhou Meisen, vice-president of Jiangsu Writers' Association:

Harmonious culture is not friendly feelings. Exposing problems, on one level of meaning, is a way to drive the construction of a harmonious society. ท Cheng Xianzhang, director of the third world, Guangdong Literature Institute: What is harmony? Is harmony, I'm OK, you're OK, we're all OK? I believe it is not. Experiment! Harmony should contain two sides: one is the subjective side, that is, you need to have harmony with yourself, you need a sense of satisfaction. The other is objective, you need to have harmony with society, there needs to be comprehension, understanding, and respect.

ท Peng Mingyan, vice-president of Guangdong Writers' Association: The responsibility of an author is to use the conscience and reflection of a literary artist to find disharmony within harmony, and after finding the reason for this disharmony and the means to eliminate the disharmonious elements, to push society to world a more harmonious development. ท Cao Wenxuan, vice-president of Beijing Writers' Association, PKU professor, children's author: In President Hu Jintao's important speech there was a high-frequency word, harmony. I really like this word. Harmony is an issue in traditional Chinese philosophy and aesthetics. Looking dialectically, the emphasis now is on widening harmony; that is, there still exists a bit of disharmony. The literary ranks are currently harmonious, but artistic works are currently not very harmonious. If any of you casually pick up a magazine or a literary work and flip through it, you will get the Essay, sensation that base, vulgar, volatile artistic works are really no longer rare. I often say to my friends that in today's fast-paced, busy, utilitarian times, reading this kind of low, fast-food stuff will stop you up and make you uncomfortable. Last year I went with a friend to Sweden for the award ceremony for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I really did not want to go in; I stood there in the hall thinking: such a bright hall, such an elegant scene €” how could they give the Nobel Prize in Literature to Jelinek, an author who depicted such abnormality and world, illicit sex? Can't literature have a bit more harmonious beauty? Not long ago, I reread Tolstoy's War and Born Into Essay, Peace , and as before, my eyes brimmed with tears, because the novel shone with the brightness of third world child humanity. Much of the Fiction Story: Alala, readership likes to third watch Korean soaps these days, perhaps because they contain so much traditional, harmonious culture. So then, why does some of our literature today incline toward the poisonous, the ruthless, the Fiction Alala War Goddess Essay, dead? In our literature there should be more of the harmonious beauty of traditional Chinese culture. Jia Pingwa and third, Cao Wenxuan in particular were raked over the coals for their views, which were seen by some bloggers and forum posters as toadying €” was Hu's speech really that perfectly crafted? Other reactions were more sanguine €” what else could they say €” and pointed to Jia's history of writing controversial books that were not exactly harmonious themselves. This is remember, not the first time that this issue has been brought up €” the CWA has been attacked for irrelevance on third world child, one end and its contribution to Essay an environment that's actually hostile to good literature on third world child, the other. Some commenters brought up Sha Yexin's question, How can you ask a writer like Louis Cha to write wuxia novels according to Justice: Law Essay the spirit of the 'Three Represents'?

Others referred to world Wang Lixiong's widely-circulated statement announcing his withdrawal from the CWA in 2001. Wang, author of the Kate Braverman's the Mekong Delta Essay, popular apocalyptic thriller Yellow Peril and third, more recently known for christina rosetti, his writing on Tibetan culture, tossed out his membership in disgust over the association's emphasis on ideology and political work. There doesn't seem to be an third child, English version of his statement online, so here is a rough translation: # To the Fiction Alala War Goddess, Chinese Writers' Association: After reading the speeches, resolutions, and third world child, summations in the first issue of Writers Bulletin (2001) that I just received, I have decided to withdraw from the Chinese Writers' Association. To explain why I would make such a decision, I performed some calculations on the first piece in the bulletin, Abstract of Comrade Jin Binghua's address to the closing ceremony of the sixth session of the fifth congress of the Chinese Writers' Association; the following is a list of the frequency certain words are found in the text: Party: 24; Jiang Zemin: 8; general secretary: 3; Deng Xiaoping: 6; Ding Guangen: 2; Central Propaganda Department: 2; Central: 5; Propaganda chief: 6; Three Represents: 6; Marxism-Leninism: 2; Mao Zedong Thought: 2; Advanced culture: 6; Important thought: 5; Directing thought: 2; Great banner: 2; banner: 3; Strategically advantageous position: 4; Leaders: 4; Direct: 7; Advocate: 2; Aim: 1; Guide: 2; Direction: 10; Orientation: 2; Guiding principle: 4; Policy: 3; Carry out: 4; Politics: 6; Overall situation: 12; Stable: 3; Propaganda: 2; Socialism: 10; Main melody: 5; Task: 4; Offering: 2; Double Hundred: 2; Two Do's: 2; Seize: 2; Firmly grasp: 1; Grasp: 2; Lift high: 3; Struggle: 6; Put into effect: 6; Study: 9; Lecture: 9; Earnest: 8; Strengthen: 4; Persevere: 12; Responsibility: 3; Consciousness: 7; Thought: 15; State of glory movie summary affairs: 8; Organization: 2; Position: 1; Core: 1. Enterprising and revived, compose new works for the new century of literature for socialism with Chinese characteristics. This resolution passed by Born, the entire assembly of the CWA totals 543 characters; 413 of them talk politics. Similar writing appears in the same issue of third Writers Bulletin , eight pieces in total. Looking at this stuff, I thought of a story: A man from the northeast trained a parrot. If you pulled his left leg, he would say Hello; if you pulled his right leg, he would say, goodbye. One day, the remember, northeasterner suddenly wondered, if you pulled both legs of the third, parrot at the same time, what would he say? So, he gave it a try, and the parrot said to him, Son of a bitch!

You trying to kill me? €”€” This story demonstrates that even a parrot, who's just imitating, can sometimes come up with something new to say. What is strange is that the Chinese Writers' Association, which brings together nearly all of the country's best wordsmiths, knows only how to speak this dead language. I can't help but think €” is it that China's writers are naturally all corpses, or is it that the China Writers' Association wants to, and is in the process of, turning China's writers into corpses? In the 80s, Chen Huangmei, my elder, and Shi Tiesheng, my friend, brought me into From Delta, the Association. Third World Child! Although I never looked to rosetti the association to gain any sort of benefit, I at least thought that becoming a member was a kind of honor. Typically, my personality is neither impetuous nor demanding; I can understand the third world, impotence of individuals and organizations in China's special environment. However, in view of the words above, there is Fiction, no longer any honor to speak of, only a writer's shame. For this reason, I hereby declare that as of today, I have withdrawn from the China Writers' Association.

2 May 2001, Beijing. Has there been progress? Tie Ning's address at the closing ceremony of this year's congress uses harmony 12 times, and third, starts off with the following passage: During the congress, the representatives conscientiously listened and enthusiastically discussed general secretary Hu Jintao's important speech at the opening ceremony. Everyone unanimously agreed that comrade Hu Jintao's important speech opened up a new direction for a new phase of Chinese literature in the midst of our construction of movie summary a socialist harmonious society, and has major guiding significance for the prosperous development of socialist literary work. Everyone also heard the third world child, report on the domestic situation presented by State Council Premier Wen Jiabao, and the report on the international situation presented by State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan. Everyone gained a new understanding of the Central Committee's great strategic deployment for the construction of a socialist harmonious society, and gained a new appreciation for the mission and responsibility of literary workers. However, as Wang Lixiong alludes to in his statement, this is probably just standard boilerplate for the first speech of a newly-installed official. And despite all the references to Let's Give Immigration Law Essay current political buzzwords, Tie Ning's address says nothing explicit about literature serving the party or government €” it leaves out completely that section of Jin Binghua's address that dealt with review and censorship of sensitive topics.

So that's a start, at least. Whether having a functioning president for world child, the first time this century will start any major changes in the way CWA operates is something that, given the Essay, speed of bureaucracy, will probably take quite a while to make itself felt. Third World Child! In the paper experiment, meantime, we can at least be grateful that writers are no longer being urged to write in child, service of the three represents. Note : Sai Jinhua (ต›‡‘Šฑ) was a famous courtesan in the late Qing, who later accompanied her diplomat husband to chromatography experiment Europe. She was the world, image of an independent woman, but I found no information regarding any presidency of the Authors Guild, which doesn't list its past presidents anywhere. It's possible some American author's name is rendered phonetically into Kate Braverman's short Tall Tales From the Mekong, Chinese as ต›‡‘Šฑ. Addendum : It's probably an error on the part of a clueless editor; Pearl S. Buck apparently presided over the Authors Guild in the 1960s, and child, her name in Chinese is remember rosetti, ต› . China Media Project: Writer Tie Ning becomes first female chairman of world child China Writer's Association Xiaoxiang Morning Post (Chinese): How will the beautiful young female author Tie Ning guide the Into Essay, CWA? People Online (Chinese): Writer representatives divide into groups to discuss President Hu Jintao's important speech Southern Daily via Netease (Chinese): Famous writers collectively study Hu Jintao's speech Pro State in Flames (Chinese): Jia Pingwa: About to climax (Chinese): Wang Lixiong: Statement of world Withdrawal from the China Writers' Association China Federation of Literary and Arts Circles (Chinese): More documents and commentary on the congress China Writers' Association (Chinese): homepage Wang Lixiong image from Tags for this entry: Comments on The Chinese Writers' Association: what good is it?

As it happens, I€™m about halfway through reading Wang Lixiong€™s brilliant book about Kate Braverman's Tales From the Mekong, Tibet. Every page brims with honesty and sincerity. Third Child! And at the same time, he is one of the few writers of prose that I€™ve read in chromatography, Chinese (granted, not a lot) who has combined a novelists eye for description and child, vivid use of un-stale language, combined with a good historian€™s sense of objectivity and War Goddess, brevity. I wonder if that sort of third child writing is only possible under a more free system. What prizes does the CWA give out? I wonder, to what degree do the books that receive those prizes reflect the current political goals? The big prizes the Essay, association runs are the world, the Mao Dun prize (novels), the remember rosetti, Lu Xun prize (short fiction, poetry, essays, translation, and child, criticism), and the Children's Literature prize. Experiment! The Lu Xun prize is world child, a decade old, the Story:, others were started in the early 80s. They're all supposed to reflect these political goals, at least according to world child the charters (see descriptions here), but it's probably easier to criticize a work for obviously not living up to Marxist-Leninist goals than it is to actually identify those goals in a work, at least these days. The Mao Dun prize has been criticized its last two rounds (it's awarded every four years) for being out of touch, but the accuracy of that claim is debatable - people complain about awards all the time if their favorite doesn't win. Interestingly, SF author Wu Yan reports that out of the remember rosetti, 953 delegates (selected from 7690 association members), just 48 were children's authors, compared to world 367 fiction authors and 125 theorists and critics.

Of course, that's far better representation than the SF writers - just six of Blindness Essay them were at the congress. Interesting. I can't say that I recognize that many of the Mao Dun winners, and I haven't read any. Third Child! My wife really liked €Šฉ†–ฏž—š„‘ฌคผ€‹, and €Šนณ‡กš„ธ–•Œ€‹seems popular. What books enter the canon of literature in China, and glory, how that happens seems to be a fascinating process. I wonder how much power do these people have in that process?

I always thought enhancing the world, role of sci-fi was a good way to popularize scientific knowlegde (™ฎŠง‘ญฆŸฅฏ†). Pearl Buck's Chinese name is rendered as ต› ผŒthat's probably the Xiaoxiang Morning Post piece mistaken it as ต›‡‘Šฑ the courtesan. But this really leads to Kate Braverman's short Tall the Mekong funny effect, I enjoy it;-) You're probably right, William. I couldn't find any mention of an AG presidency for Buck when I searched earlier, but I just ran across this JFK letter to her thanking her for his AG membership card, however, so that's probably what it is. I've added an update to the post.

This article is world, really great, even from the viewpoint of a Chinese reader, as me. I just wonder how a foreign editor could know China so well (esp. China's cultural arena as in this article) if he was not that smart.
